A slightly foggy morning at Longlevens (there's a pitch, and allegedly a game in there somewhere, I assure you) - sun kept trying to break through, but failed, and I can't find my gloves - disaster.... I was going to add a link to frost bitten fingers there, but I've thought quite a bit better of it, having looked at some images on Google....
Conditions weren't helped by the, er, smog from certain spectators, it has to be noted.... Steve....
'Levens had clearly still got their time zones confused after last weekend, as they were all still tucked up in bed 2 minutes into the game, when a simple move in the centre saw Chipping Sodbury stroll through for a 0-7 lead.
Eventually 'Levens woke up, with Ollie Deacon getting a lot of ball in the forwards, making good ground, and Nathan Hazard and Taff Ford tackling strongly and running hard in the backs, and 10 minutes in the home team scored a try through Ben Gabb to make the score 5-7.
Shortly after this score 'Levens spilled the ball in the backs, knocking on, and simply stopped playing - watching the visitors pick the ball up and run clear, scoring for a 5-14 lead.
Chipping Sodbury continued to play well, moving the ball in the backs, but some good 'Levens defence, including Jed Jones making a welcome return playing at fullback, prevented any further score.
Longlevens moved back up the field, pressuring the visitors on the right, and Sam Lane came off the back of a scrum, exploiting the blind side and crashing over from 15 yards for 10-14.
Longlevens continued to exert pressure, with Sam Rees and Chris Powick putting in a lot of work in the forwards, with another good break from Sam Lane, supported by John Phillips coming off his wing, and Chris Johnson putting in some good work from a Chipping Sodbury penalty concession.
The first half closed at 10-14, with more good work from the home backs, including a good run from Jacob Dyer.
After some half time refreshments (not just for the players) 'Levens really rolled up their sleeves and started to get stuck in, with the visitors conceeding a number of penalties and Paul Watson showing an impressive turn of speed from a quick tap on the left, off-loading to Chris Johnson just before the line for a 15-14 lead.
5 minutes later Taff Ford (left) made a lovely break in the centre, ghosting through a gap at pace for 20-14.
Shane O'Brian was putting in some good work for 'Levens on the wing - determined in defence and showing pace in attack, feeding Taff again to break on the right.
From a 'Levens lineout following this break, the home team played some good, simple rugby, with a clean take at the lineout, a controlled forward drive, and Paul Watson grounding the ball for 27-14, with Rory Woodward (yes, he has got the wrong shorts on)adding the extras.
Shortly after this, with the visitors looking to come back into the game, Woodward transgressed, and was yellow carded, but Chipping Sodbury couldn't capitalise and the home team came away again, with Sam Rees charging down a kick, and Matt Hayward (carrying an injury we won't mention) going over in the left corner, for a final score of 32-14, and 'Levens's 5th victory of the season.
After much good natured debate in the clubhouse, Ollie Deacon was named m-o-t-m, and eventually managed to do the needful...
Nearly forgot the wine update - disaster!! Nice bottle of Deakin Estate 2005 Shiraz - the last of the birthday wine, sob....
